Wild lettuce is one of the common names of Lactucavirosa – a biennial flowering plant from the sunflower family Asteraceae. The species is related to common lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and its tree looks similar to that of prickly lettuce. However, it grows much higher – up to 7 feet, and is also stouter.
Wild lettuce is also known as bitter lettuce, great lettuce, tall lettuce, and opium lettuce.

Traditional Uses
In accent Egypt, wild lettuce was given to new mothers to increase breast milk production. But, in the early 19th century, the plant was found to have opium-like properties, minus the side effects, and has been primarily used for pain relief and induce/improve sleep ever since. It was also used for severe cough and to support and improve digestion.
Modern Uses
Wild lettuce is still widely used by herbal experts for pain relief and help with sleep issues. The herb is also known to help with anxiety and general restlessness. Wild lettuce is also used in sleep support supplements.
Fun Fact
Wild lettuce is often referred to as the poor man’s opium. The plant was also used by physicians in the 19th century as a replacement for opium.
