Vinca major is an evergreen, perennial, flowering plant from the family Apocynaceae, commonly known as the dogbane family. The plant is characterized by its violet-blue flowers and creeping growth habit. Growing at a fast pace, vinca major readily forms a dense groundcover.
It’s also known with the common names of blue periwinkle, greater periwinkle, large periwinkle, and bigleaf periwinkle.

Vincamine, an alkaloid present in greater periwinkle, is used in the pharmaceutical industry as a vasodilator and cerebral stimulant. It also has anti-inflammatory and skin protective properties and is considered effective for improving blood flow in the body.
Fun Fact
In many cultures, periwinkle plant was believed to have the power to ward off evil spirits. In France, it was considered a symbol of friendship whereas many also believed that lost memories could be retrieved by gazing at the periwinkle plant.
