7 habits that spoil your vision

Many processes in our body don't depend on us, but are rather caused by genetic features or age-related changes. This is also true for our vision. However, there are certain factors that we can work to control. For example, taking care not to cause additional damage to our eyes, keeping them healthy for as long as possible. Here are 7 common habits that you should avoid in order to maintain long and healthy vision: 

1. Rubbing your eyes

Rubbing your eyes feels so nice sometimes, and it's difficult to resist scratching your eyes when they are tired or there’s something in them. But instant relief will give way to unpleasant consequences. Rubbing your eyes can cause permanent corneal damage and an eventual breakdown of the fragile vessels around the eyes.

If you feel that something is in your eye, don't rub your eye to get it out; this can cause the particle into your eye to get lodged even deeper. Instead, blink rapidly so that your tears wash it away. If this doesn't help, use eye drops to flush out your eyes.

2. Using your smartphone all day long

If you use your computer or smartphone for a long time, your blink rate reduces. This leads to a decrease in the rate of formation of tears, which are necessary for moistening the eyes. Because of this, the eyes begin to dry and get tired.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, it is useful to follow the “20-20-20” rule: after every 20 minutes of screen time, you need to shift your eyes to look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This will help your eyes to relax. 

3. Forgetting to wear sunglasses

Intense UV exposure can damage the retina and cause eye disease such as cataracts. Therefore, it is important to remember that sunglasses are not only a fashion accessory but also necessary protection.

4. Wearing contact lenses incorrectly

Here we are talking about using old contact lenses, as well as wearing lenses in the shower or pool. All of this contributes to the entry and spread of bacteria in the eyes, which can lead to infection and vision damage.

5. Using expired eye makeup

Even if your mascara has half a tube left and still works well, it is important to say goodbye to it after a certain period of time. Using expired eye cosmetics may lead to irritation and the development of an infection. The American Academy of Ophthalmology confirms that eye makeup should be thrown away after three months. Another expert suggests that six to nine is fine for mascara, and longer for eyeshadow, but it's better to stay on the safe side.

6. Avoiding eye protection

Very often, eye damage occurs when performing household chores, such as cleaning or repairs. Even if you feel silly doing so, wear safety goggles. After all, the real stupidity would be to lose your sight over such a trifle.

7. Skipping your yearly eye examination

Often, we don't worry about our health as long as everything seems alright. However, once the problem appears, it may already be too late. Therefore, even if you are sure that your vision is perfect, don't forget to have it regularly checked. After all, problems are always easier to prevent than to cure.
