Brazilian peppertree, having the scientific name Schinus terebinthifolia, is a sprawling, evergreen, shrub-like flowering plant from the family Anacardiaceae, commonly known as the cashew family. The plant can grow as high as 30 to 40 feet and produces white flowers and berry-like fruits, which are green when produced but turn red upon maturity.
Brazilian peppertree is also known with the common names of rose pepper, aroeira, wilelaiki (also spelled as wililaiki), broadleaved pepper tree, Florida holly, and Christmasberry tree.

Fun Fact

Some recent research studies have found that certain compounds present in the fruit of Brazilian peppertree can be effective against a specific group of gram-positive bacteria, called MRSA. They have been found to stop the bacteria from producing their toxin that damages tissues as well as to suppress their communication pathway. However, more research needs to be carried out before any conclusive statement can be issued.
